Key Decision Points for Knowing When to Retire
1. Eligible to tap tax-deferred savings without penalty for early withdrawal
- Age: 59 1/2 (Note: Age 55 for distributions from employer plans upon termination of employment)
- Don’t forget: Federal income taxes will be due on pre-tax contributions and earnings
2. Eligible for early Social Security benefits
- Age: 62
- Don’t forget: Taking benefits before full retirement age reduces each monthly payment
3. Eligible for Medicare
- Age: 65
- Don’t forget: Contact Medicare three months before your 65th birthday
4. Full retirement age for Social Security
- Age: 65 to 67, depending on when you were born
- Don’t forget: After full retirement age, earned income no longer affects Social Security benefits

Bryan Beatty featured in Investment News article: “Advisers lean toward Yellen for Fed post over Summers”
Aug. 3, Investment News — “As the Federal Reserve winds down the massive bond-buying program that has kept interest rates low for years, its next chairman will have to excel in people skills, making Janet Yellen the best choice, according to investment advisers,” explains legislation and regulations reporter Mark Schoeff, Jr., in today’s issue of Investment News.
For insights, he interviewed Bryan Beatty, a partner at Egan Berger & Weiner LLC. Although he predicts that the Obama administration will want a “dovish” Fed chair, Beatty wants the next leader to raise interest rates.
“What we need more than anything is healthy savings—real money at the banks,” Beatty said. “It would be very beneficial for spending in our economy if [savers] got a little interest on their money and not have to risk it so much. [The Fed] is fixated on the asset side rather than the disposable-income side.”
