Photographer Matthew Worden is a Seattle native who made his way east to Washington, DC, in September 2000. He had landed his dream job, working in the photo department of the city’s premier regional magazine, Washingtonian.
There, he found himself shooting stunning celebrities, the nation’s most famous (and infamous) politicians, the best restaurants, and trendsetters in fashion, design, and architecture.
Interestingly, Worden once thought anthropology was his calling. But then he took a journalism class at Central Washington University. “Photojournalism captured my imagination. I loved being able to dive inside the facade, and bring out the soul of my subjects. I knew that photography, and more recently videography, was what I would do for a living.”
Honors abound. In recent years, Worden has won the Society of Professional Journalists award, a City and Regional Magazine Award, and two Dateline awards.
After 12 years at Washingtonian, he decided to branch out. Today, he splits his time between DC, Seattle, and other national and international assignments.
“I never know where I might be in any given month,” he says, noting that when he was on the East Coast earlier this spring, he did a shoot for Tiffany & Co., before heading downtown to shoot photos at a DC restaurant. Then he was off to take photos of professors at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and after that he was on location at the National Air and Space Museum taking photos of Lockheed Martin’s SR-71A Blackbird. “The diversity of my days keeps me energized.”
