The Essential HR Handbook
Writing and publishing a book held the top spot on my bucket list for years until 2008 when I co-wrote The Essential HR Handbook with Sharon Armstrong.
It was one of the most challenging experiences of my life—and one of the most rewarding.
So last year, I did it again. My colleague Cornelia Gamlem and I penned The Big Book of HR, which hit bookstores on January 22.
Granted, researching and writing a 90,000 word book in less than six months (as specified in the contract with the publisher) was a challenge.
But, more importantly, we know that managing people can be the most challenging part of any leader’s day. That’s why we packed the book with information on everything from the most strategic HR-related issues to the smallest tactical details of how to successfully manage people.
Each topic covered includes information on related legal issues and includes stories from leading organizations to illustrate how human resources can positively impact the organization. We included many sample forms and templates as well as a list of additional resources.
The book explains how to:
- Identify, motivate, and retain superstar employees.
- Determine the kind of employees needed and when to hire them.
- Select the best applicants.
- Assimilate new talent into the organization.
- Manage using total rewards and performance management.
- Maintain positive employee relations and manage conflict.

Mitchell is a human resources and organization development consultant who is widely known in the areas of recruitment and retention. She has experience in both for-profit and not-for-profit sectors and has consulted for a variety of organizations around the world.
She served in senior human-resources leadership positions with Marriott International and several technology firms in the Washington, DC, area before co-founding the Millennium Group International, which she sold in 2008.
