Celebrate the New Year by Eating Intuitively

Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD, is an award-winning dietitian with a counseling practice specializing in eating disorders, has been the nutrition expert for “Good Morning America”, and qualified for the 1984 Olympic trials in the women’s marathon. Her favorite food is chocolate, which can be savored, slowly.

Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDRD, Fiaedp, FADA, has been in private practice in Beverly Hills as a nutrition therapist for more than 30 years. A Certified Eating Disorder Specialist on the treatment team at the Eating Disorder Unit at Beverly Hills Medical Center, her favorite food is also chocolate — the dark version.

So it was a great day in 1995 when these healthy eating superheroes paired up to publish Intuitive Eating, a best-selling book on rebuilding a healthy body image, and making peace with food.

“We’ve all been there — angry with ourselves for overeating, for our lack of willpower, for failing at yet another diet,” explains Resch.

“But the problem is not us,” insists Tribole. “It is that dieting, with its emphasis on rules and regulations, has stopped us from listening to our bodies.”

In addition to explaining the science behind intuitive eating, this easy-to-navigate guide teaches readers how to:

  • Reject diet mentality forever
  • Identify the three Eating Personalities, which define our eating difficulties
  • Find satisfaction in your eating
  • Feel your feelings without using food
  • Honor hunger and feel fullness
  • Follow the 10 Principles of Intuitive Eating
  • Work to achieve a new and safe relationship with food and, ultimately, your body
  • Raise an “intuitive eater”

Consider the second principle: Honor Your Hunger.

The authors instruct: “Keep your body biologically fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise you can trigger a primal drive to overeat. Once you reach the moment of excessive hunger, all intentions of moderate, conscious eating are fleeting and irrelevant. Learning to honor this first biological signal sets the stage for re-building trust with yourself and food.”

Principle 9 dovetails with this month’s Happiness Project Tip: Exercise and Feel the Difference.

Tribole and Resch explain: “Forget militant exercise. Just get active and feel the difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie burning effect of exercise. If you focus on how you feel from working out, such as energized, it can make the difference between rolling out of bed for a brisk morning walk or hitting the snooze alarm. If when you wake up, your only goal is to lose weight, it’s usually not a motivating factor in that moment of time.”

Check out all 10 principles on their website: intuitiveeating.com.

Here’s to your Healthy Living in 2015!

Intuitive Eater’s Holiday Bill of Rights

By Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD

What if peace on Earth could begin at the dinner table?

Imagine experiencing an inner peace, free from incessant worry about what to eat.

It’s hard to enjoy the holidays when you are preoccupied with eating or worried about what to say to relatives who have an annual tradition of telling you what and how to eat.

Consider your Intuitive Eating Bill of Rights, as we enter the holiday season, to help you foster inner peace with food, mind, and body.

  1. You have the right to savor your meal, without cajoling or judgment, and without discussion of calories eaten or the amount of exercise needed to burn off said calories.
  2. You have the right to enjoy second servings without apology.
  3. You have the right to honor your fullness, even if that means saying “no thank you” to dessert or a second helping of food.
  4. It is not your responsibility to make someone happy by overeating, even if it took hours to prepare a specialty holiday dish.
  5. You have the right to say, “No thank you,” without explanation, when offered more food.
  6. You have the right to stick to your original answer of “no,” even if you are asked multiple times. Just calmly and politely repeat, “No, thank you, really.”
  7. You have the right to eat pumpkin pie for breakfast.

Remember, no one, except for you, knows how you feel, both emotionally and physically.

Only you can be the expert on your body, which requires inner attunement, rather than the external, well-meaning, suggestions from family.
